Grown Up Christmas List

I wrote one of these last year, and my husband recently asked for ideas for Christmas so I thought I'd share with the whole world! haha!  I know what you're thinking...'Christmas?!  It hasn't even been Halloween or Thanksgiving yet!'  But news flash folks, we are only two months shy of that spectacular holiday!  So, without further ado...

1.  Gift Cards
Specifically to Amazon and Lowe's.
These babies are great!  It gives me free reign to buy what I really want.  With all of the home do-overs I want to do (paint walls, paint kitchen cabinets, redecorate, get couch slipcovers), gift cards to these places would be fab.

2.  Brown Boots
I have some camel colored riding boots that I got a thrift store that are leather and really cute, but I really want some brown ones.  I would love to have real leather ones, but then they get pricey.  Here are a few I have looked at online and found these on a great discount shoe site 6pm.com:

*Taken from my Pinterest board*

3.  Home Decor Items
I know I just said I wanted gift cards for these things, but I'll give you a gist of what I like--in case you're out and about.  I have to admit that I have found some great things at Goodwill and other thrift stores, so don't be afraid of checking there.  I love anything white (not cream), silver or mercury glass, yellow, gray, or turquoise, or dark brown (these will be the basic colors of the house when it's all said and done!).  Anything that has an interesting shape like funky picture frames or a mirror with a unique border (doesn't matter what color because I love spray paint!).  I love

apothecary jars

and I saw this white scalloped bowl at Pier 1 and fell in love.  I love the shape of it.  Pretty and decorative to set out on the kitchen counter with fun things inside.

I also am really interested in a glass cloche.  You can find them at World Market, Pottery Barn, Amazon, etc.  I have been scouring Goodwill hoping something similar would pop up, but no luck yet.

4.  Home Decor and DIY books
A few of my favorite DIY bloggers have come out with books or ebooks.  I would love to get my hands on any of these babies:

From (blog>) The Handmade Home: (book>) Handmade Walls ebook (released Nov. 1)

From (blog>)Young House Love: (book>) Young House Love (released Nov. 6, but available for pre-order)

From (blog>) Ana White: (book>) The Handbuilt Home

5. Get Carpets Cleaned

I vacuum and spot treat (duh), but I would LOVE it if a professional came and deep cleaned them!  Little spots drive me NUTS and I would feel so much better with freshly cleaned carpet. :)

6.  White Dishes
I have two sets of dishes.  One set is pretty nice: ceramic with bold colors from Dansk.  The other set is melamine with rainbow colored polka dots that I bought before Brian and I were even married.  I would really love to yard sale these items and just have one set of white ceramic dishes.  Eventually, I would like to have either open shelving or glass doors on some of my cabinets and white dishes are much more pleasing to the eye.  I found this bundled set at Walmart.  I love that it's just dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, and coffee cups.  I didn't want all the extras and the bundle serves 8.

Here is the setting I have now x2.  *Taken just 10 days after Brian and I got married....awwww
Funky and cute, but not classy or grown up...

SO, that about sums it up!  What do YOU want for Christmas?!

It's OK Thursday

Its Ok Thursdays
First time linking up with http://acompletewasteofmakeup.com/ to join in on the It's OK Thursday link-up!

It's OK...that I have been blogging for a long time and still don't know how to post someone's button on my sidebar or link a photo to website. (thus the reason for the link and no picture above)  **EDIT:  Thanks to Anna Lizbeth, I know how to now!  Woohoo!

It's OK...that I have done full hair and make up this entire week and have hardly gone anywhere (read:grocery store, Goodwill, fundraiser at the Y, and a cooking class at church).

It's OK...that while I have had full hair and make up, I have been wearing yoga pants and old T-shirts from high school.

It's OK...that I bought Christmas decorations from Michael's and TJ Maxx this weekend and am a little too excited to put them up.

It's OK...that Christmas is 2 months away and haven't even thought about buying gifts yet.

It's OK...that this post will have no pictures because of my predicament.  Help!

It's OK...that I will spend Friday night completely alone (except for Brody, but he can't save me from a burglar!)  because my husband is going to his brother's school in the mountains to dress as a zombie and scare their students at their haunted house.

It's OK...that we bought our son a swing and now he is deathly afraid of it.

It's OK...that we also bought him a wagon and he LOVES it.  #itallevensoutintheend

It's OK...that we have had our windows open all week and it is my favorite to listen to the birds while drinking my cup 'o joe...  #80sinoctober

I could keep going, but I didn't want to bore you.  OH! Here's one last one:

It's NOT OK...that my kid crapped himself in his crib on Monday and discovered how to take off his pants and diaper...yeah, that happened....

HAPPY THURSDAY BLOG LAND!

XOXO, JESSICA

Blogs are better with pictures: Help a blogger out

I don't know if it is just because I go through blogger and it only applies to those with <.blogspot.com> in their url, but I got a message when uploading pictures to a post I wrote that said I did not have any more room in my picasa web albums.  First off, I didn't even know I was using picasa because I basically just upload pictures straight from my desktop that I drag over from iPhoto or the web, but now I have no idea how to remedy the situation.  It says that I can buy more space for like $2/month, but really???  I don't want to do that.  Did THE MAN finally get me?  When I went to my picasa web albums (for the first time ever), I tried to delete a picture to see what it would do, and yep, it got deleted from the 'ol blog.  It says that I have room in my 'phone album' which I see I have to download the (free) Google+ app, but does that mean from here on out I can only put pics from my phone on here?

So, I guess what I am asking is:

What do YOU do?

Thanks for the help!!
xoxo, Jessica

Bathroom Reveal!! (Finally!)

This post has been a long time coming!!  Admittedly, the bathroom has been almost done for a while now.  I have just been procrastinating putting the frames above the toilet (that you'll see below).

This bathroom started out as lime green with a rainbow striped shower curtain.  We were young, loved bright colors and wanted to go crazy with our house.  You will see in posts later on down the road, that each room in our house is a different color.  Finally, after 6 years of living here, I wanted a change.  Something a little more sophisticated and something that's a little more 'sellable' in the future.  So, we started small with our master bath.  This house is small, and our master bath is really small.  But that's okay. :)  Well, I better stop jabbin'.  Ready?

Disclaimer:  I am not a DIY blogger.  Though, I wish I was. :)  You would think after reading hundreds of before and after posts, I would remember to take really good 'before' shots.  I thought I did, but they magically disappeared from my camera.  That or I was having a mommy hallucination....

Before:

Seriously, Jessica this is the best cabinet shot you could get?  But alas, yes.  Yes it is.  I was actually taking a pic of the havoc wreaked by my son.  We had brown, wooden cabinets that are typical in most homes.

Here is the aforementioned green walls, but the cabinets painted white.  Here is a cheap-y trick:  We didn't want to buy all new hardware because that stuff adds up, so we removed it and spray painted them with brushed nickel spray paint!  Genius!  Got the idea from an awesome DIYer that I previously talked about here, and you can see where I got the idea to reuse my hardware here.

Let's back up the shot a little bit.  Oh, hey hubby!  We took down our previous light fixture because it was the Hollywood lights, and while I'd like to pretend I'm famous, I was over them.  You can't really tell, but when they installed the lights, they decided not to center the hole, so our new lights are a wee bit off center, but it's not that bad....

And guess what?  Those are all the before pics I could find! ahh!  Just pretend there was a towel hanger above the toilet, a rainbow-striped shower curtain, three small white shelves to the left of the sink, and a towel hanger and sparkly rainbow fish decor on the wall opposite the toilet.  Classy, eh?

During:

Our paint color was Valspar's Stone Partition, in case you are interested! (from Lowe's)

There were a few places that needed to be touched up, so I just grabbed my craft paint brushes and went to town!  Some places even had the previous green paint poking out, so I went over that too.  Suggestion:  If you plan on painting your baseboards to freshen them up a bit, I would take the primer all the way from wall to baseboard, so that you have no previous color when you pull up the tape.  Live and learn...

And the after!  Some of these were taken with my camera and some my phone.  Surprisingly, the phone ones turned out MUCH better.  This bathroom gets NO natural light, so sorry for the 'yellow glow' in some of them.  :)

AFTER!!!:

New paint, new medicine cabinet, new shelf, new light fixture!

The painted cabinets.

New dark brown rugs from Kohl's.  They were 60% off in a one day only sale!  Lucky me!

Our biggest purchase-from Lowe's.  I just loved the baskets.  See that mercury glass owl up there?  Got it for free!!! From Kohl's!  I received a $10 off gift card in the mail from Kohl's and it was 50% off on that one day only sale.  Originally $20-->50% off-->$10 -$10 gift card --> FREE!  I  may have done a little dance in the parking lot. :)

The only issue with the cabinet was that since it was large, it covered the only electrical outlet in the whole bathroom!  So, my handy husband sawed out a little rectangle and VOILA!

And it's hidden with the basket when not in use.

Isn't it funny how all guys need is a toothbrush and deodorant?  Girls on the other hand...

We kept our faucet because those things are 'spensive!  Holy moly!  I was walking through World Market and saw this soap ($4--I'm a sucker for nice soap)  and cute yellow tea light holder for just $2!!

It used to look like this above the toilet, but I got a few frames from the antique general store in town and...

much better!  (This was taken with my phone--see the difference?)

And now, the shelf and towels.  Those towels!!! I am in LOVE!!  I actually saw these babies on a few different bathroom makeover blogs and I coveted them!  The bloggers said they got them from World Market.  I went to worldmarket.com and it said this item was no longer available.  I googled them and 'decorative yellow and white towels' and was having no luck!  I stopped by the World Market closest to us and GUESS WHAT!  These were on the clearance rack!  WHAT??!!  You better believe the angels were singing from Heaven and there was a light shining down directly on them!  HALLELUJAH!  I snatched up these, the hand towels, and washcloths!  Yes please!  can you tell i was am a little excited?

**Picture taken a different day, with my phone, with different towels ($2 a pop from Wal-Mart).  It just showed the shelf better. :)

I "shopped my house" for decorations to put up here.  The basket holds toilet paper, and I originally made the 'S' for a wreath that I needed to finish up.  I did buy the vase/containers from Wal-Mart for a couple dollars and I bought a big bunch of preserved Craspedia/Billy Balls/Billy Button flowers from this etsy shop.

Then, I bought some chevron fabric from fabric.com and decoupaged the light switch.

I'm kind of in love with it:).  Got the idea from etsy.

And just for kicks, a zoomed out pic with the white towels.

Here is the shower curtain that I got from Marshall's, along with a new brushed nickel rod and hooks.

Just to see the transformation:
 Before

After:

There you have it!  We had lots of fun doing this project and am sooo excited to get started on the other rooms of our house!

** I also have to add that we did this project just to change the look.  We were trying to save as much moolah in the process.  So-same floors, same countertop/sink.  The most we spent (like I said) was on the medicine cabinet (which I know takes up a lot of space) because I hated stuff sitting out all the time, and then with the cost of the shelf, hooks, paint, rugs and shower items, this only cost us maybe $200/$250.  :)  Ask if you have any questions----unless you're spammers.  I have gotten so many spam comments lately! boo!

Happy 6 Years!

Guess what y'all?  Brian and I just celebrated our 6 year anniversary last week!  I can't believe it's been 6 whole years.  We've done a lot of living and loving in the mean time.  While I sometimes wish that we would have started our family sooner, I am so thankful for the almost 5 years of it just being me and my babe.  We have had a lot of fun and gone on a lot of spontaneous trips (read: leaving for the beach at 10 pm Friday night, driving 5 hours, setting up the pop-up at 3 am, waking up and spending the entire Saturday sleeping in the sun).  And now--watching the hubs become a dad--wowzers.  And I thought he was hot before. :)  Really truly, he is my soul mate/best friend/brutha from anotha mutha.  We complement each other so well, hardly fight, squirt toothpaste on each other, whip each other with towels through the house, and wrestle on the living room floor.  Brodyissoconfused.  We hold hands in the car, kiss each other every morning and night (and in between), and just laugh our way through life.  Nugget, if you're reading this:  Thanks.  I love you.  I don't want this to ever end.  GIMY.

One Year in Charleston, SC.  Stayed at awesome house on Daniel Island and spent the weekend perusing The Slave Market and taking carriage tours of the city and playing on the playground at The Battery.  *This is the only photo I have of both of us in the same picture.  Doesn't it always end up like that?

Second Year not pictured.  Myrtle Beach, with the parentals.

Third Year in Atlanta, GA at the Coke Museum.  (We also went to the Georgia Aquarium).  Brian ate at a vegan restaurant just for me (when I was vegan) and HE LIKED IT!

Fourth Year in Chimney Rock, NC.  Hiking and horseback riding.  Camped on the French Broad River with NO HOT WATER! brrr!

Fifth Year--picnic lunch at the park with our new addition--6 weeks old.  My mom and dad got us a hotel room in a nearby city, and we went to dinner and a movie and had a baby-free night.

Sixth Year--weekend biking trip with his side of the family to the Creeper Trail in VA.  Biked 17 miles downhill.  Also, went on a small hike and saw/pet wild ponies and went to fall festival. (mega super blurry pic--texted from hubs phone to my phone, uploaded to facebook and downloaded to my computer---so yeah....)

And there you have it!  6 years of bliss.  Cheers to many more!

I Have a Problem...

saying 'no.'  I am a yes man.  I say 'yes' all too often when I really wish I could say hexy naw.  It's really annoying.  Do you have a friend that is too nice and smiley and seems to love life a little too much?  That's me.  But sometimes it sucks and said friend gets herself in a bind that she's too scared to confront and say no.  So, here I am stuck.
Blardy blar.......
